Christina Aguilera

Music > Soul / R&B > Christina Aguilera

With her transformation from teen idol to dirrty girl complete, New York's Christina Aguilera is the blond who certainly looks as if she has more fun. Aguilera sprang onto the UK charts in 1999 with the best-selling No.1 Genie In A Bottle, and the poser on everybody's lips quickly became ‘Britney or Christina?' Further success with What A Girl Wants saw Aguilera established with a fresh voice, cute looks and 1999's Grammy for Best New Artist. Three years on from debut album Christina Aguilera, and following successful collaborations with Ricky Martin and Lil' Kim, Mya and Pink (on the howlingly dirty Lady Marmalade) and she made a splash for a second time. This time however, she was bigger, brasher and bolder and occasionally favouring pink hair. With its gasp-out-loud video, Aguilera took the gloves off (along with most of her clothes) for No.1 Dirrty, showed us she meant it with the swaggering Fighter and hit the best note of her career so far with the Linda Perry-assisted Beautiful. Fierce, strong and independent, she is now singing what she wants, how she wants and is loving it. "This music is who I am," she says. "You can take it or leave it, but I'm not going to change, not for anyone."
