The Carribean group Kassav are the originators of the zouk genre, a modernization of the carnival music popular in the West Indies. The group was the brainchild of Pierre-Edouard Décimus, who founded Kassav in 1979. At first essentially a studio project, the group had a hit with the song "Soleil" from their second album. They took to the road in the West Indies with dancers and back up singers added to improve the live experience. The mix of carnival rhythms and modern keyboard and bass sounds resulted in an energetic party music. Zouk was born.
