Pink

A childhood nickname and not one that stuck after she got handy with some hair dye, Pink (aka Alecia Moore) doesn't do anything quietly. She's more Cyndi Lauper than Mariah Carey, what with the hair, the attitude, the voice. Hailing from Doylestown near Philadelphia, she was nearly in a couple of R&B groups during her teens, before being offered a solo deal with LaFace records. Her first record generated some buzz, but it wasn't until her rockier and more varied second effort, Missundaztood, that she became hot property. The album spawned massive hits like Get The Party Started, Just Like A Pill and Family Portrait. Suddenly Pink was everywhere, belting out her dance/rock mantras with passion. Whatever colour the hair (she's gone from pink to blonde to black), there's no mistaking Pink, with her charity shop chic and snarling persona. Third album Trouble has only broadened her appeal, and the dancefloor filler God Is A DJ is enough to put a smile on anyone's face. In New York working on her fifth album Funhouse, she revealed: "As an American, as a woman, I'm definitely pissed off again."
