Can you believe it’s 20 years since Tracy Chapman’s eponymous debut album? RealMusic Blog remembers hearing it in a car in Canada - a fast one, yes - and being more than a little excited. Since then, Tracy’s put out a further seven albums - have you kept up? - and now she’s back with long-player number nine, entitled “Our Bright Future”. Not only that, but she’s also announced a 21-date European tour…
The new album was recorded last summer in Los Angeles and is set to feature 11 whole songs plucked from Tracy’s clever brain. Past glories for Chapman include four Grammys and she’s best-known for her sparkling social commentary put to music in an era when that kind of thing seemed to be dying off. Still carrying the flag, the new body of work is sure to follow the same route of intimate, melodic and bluesey storytelling. RealMusic Blog saw Chapman perform in London 20 years ago, missed the last train home and hadn’t told our mum where we were going. She wasn’t best pleased, but we had a fantastic night…
Chapman’s European tour kicks off in Brussels on November 12th and doesn’t touch down in Bristol until a whole month later, December 12th. It then hotfoots it ooop north to Manchester on December 14th, hits the captial on the 15th and finishes in Strasbourg the following day. Not much opportunity to see the great lady then, so get your tickets now!
