So where were you when you heard? I was brushing my teeth, thinking about drinking beer in the sun the next day and then… And then the world changed. Forever. Don’t get me wrong, I’m not a Jacko fangirl. Sure, I see the genius in his Off The Wall, Thriller and Bad albums but the circus that’s surrounded him over the last 15 years has had nothing to do with his music, so it’s easy to forget what a total entertainer he used to be rather than the eccentric he’d become. Of the many big female hopes touted for chart success this year, Elly Jackson is so far leading the pack. How so? Well, VV Brown has yet to break the top 40, Little Boots’ album barely bruised it and Florence And The Machine seems to be having engine trouble. Only Jackson - aka La Roux - has scored a major hit single with In For The Kill and her follow-up Bulletproof landed smack on top of the singles chart yesterday. Now her self-titled debut album has arrived, brimming with synths, machines and all manner of 80s paraphernalia…
Jack Penate - Everything Is New - Out now
We’ve commented before on RealMusic Blog how much we heart Jack Penate mkII and we weren’t lying. His sophomore album Everything Is New is nothing short of brilliant, each track popping with electro frippery with splashes of reggae, disco and even hip-hop, all skewered together with Jack’s croaky voice. Jack used to be the ugly second-cousin of indie-pop, but no more. Now he’s the crown prince of electro-pop and he’s got the tight trousers to prove it.
