Fluffy as the frilly frocks and as sweet as the wedding cake, 27 Dresses is comfortably familiar and totally predictable because it does exactly what it sets out to do: entertains by delivering farcical moments, a few giggles, and the satisfaction of seeing the underdog, Jane (Katherine Heigl), win her ultimate prize for being so patient and loyal: A man and a wedding all of her own.

I am guessing that if you are going to watch this film, then you are under 20 years-old and exactly who this film is targeted to: those who love street dancing; understand the ‘urban scene’ (as they call it); like a bit of romance, a little bit of cheese; and some great music. You will also have the luxury of watching it in peace… (personal rant imminent). A marvellously touching tale about why we love and our high expectations that is both genuinely funny and uncomfortably tragic at the same time. Title aside the only sexual references in the film are a few lines delivered by the stunned and curious townsfolk — after all, isn’t THAT or IT why such a doll is bought? But this same religious, small-town community demonstrate a united spirit never before witnessed in reality that is totally inspirational, if not slightly unbelievable, by rallying around socially-challenged introvert Lars and his new plastic ‘girlfriend’ Bianca. In doing so, they demonstrate their love for this mentally ill young man with a delusional problem (that Bianca is real), and get drawn into his recovery process by using Bianca as a lesson in courage - the courage not to take everything at face value, and courage to self reflect. We also witness a few of these folk with their own childlike comfort items, such as Lars’ work colleague who is obsessed with action figures, and potential love interest Margo and her teddy bear.

As a big 300 fan and a sucker for the odd spoof or two, I was looking forward to this with an open mind. But, oh dear, this film is so bad you wonder who the joke is really on: the hapless actors/characters or us, the movie goers, for parting with our hard-earned cash to see it. What is really annoying is most of the funniest gags — and there aren’t many — appear after the first part of the end credits (a sad reflection on this project in general), when Dubya Bush and Tom Cruise get their comeuppance and are launched into the ‘pit of death’.
