Yet another Marvel comic big-screen addition, but one that has oodles of appeal for non-comic fans and packs a meaty punch in terms of plot, effects and casting. Robert Downey Jr., the mostly unlikely of all actors to be cast as a superhero, is quite refreshingly brilliant as wealthy industrialist Tony Stark, aka ‘Iron Man’, in that he brings sardonic and flawed, but charismatic personality straits to an otherwise two-dimensional comic-book character. In so doing, Downey Jr. actually fleshes out the character and brings him, rather convincingly, to life. ———–
The story also injects a topical newsworthiness to it with the addition of Taliban baddies trying to wreck havoc. Hence, the fictional threat is married with a very real-life one that almost has you wishing that there was a real-life hero out there who could fight the ‘war on terror’ in the mountainsides. This film actually provides the means of escapism in an otherwise fearful world at present, and it comes with some exhilarating action scenes to boot, and a fine supporting cast that includes Terrence Howard, Jeff Bridges and Gwyneth Paltrow.

A fantasy fun-filled ride where the bad guys never win, and order and our faith in justice are restored. Jon Favreau’s action adventure is definitely one to buy for the DVD collection and for Downey Jr. fans looking for something a little different from their very own screen hero.
