Single mom Rose Lorkowski’s mantra in the film is: “You are strong. You are powerful. You can do anything”. This should be adopted by the eternally brilliant and charming Amy Adams, who plays the downtrodden, but determined working-class mum, because Hollywood is bowing down and kissing the very ground this talented actress walks on. And quite rightfully so, after Christine Jeffs‘ delightfully funny and touching comedy drama, where Adams excels once more beside Emily Blunt (The Devil Wears Prada) and Alan Arkin in a wonderful survival story against the odds. If you loved Little Miss Sunshine, this is an absolute MUST for you.

The Autobots and their sworn enemies, the Decepticons, use Planet Earth once more as their battleground - well, blow the hell out of Egypt, anyway. Only this time we discover that our metallic alien visitors might share as much of Earth’s history as we do in the opening scenes, reminiscent of an Aborigine documentary. The rest of the full-on, non-stop action sequel is about the ‘body beautiful’ - human or mechanical - and an unashamedly brash demonstration of US military might, in case you weren’t sure of just who has the biggest guns on the planet (and it ain’t the Bots).

Set and filmed in Manchester this film, in the words of a true Manc, is “Absolutely f*!$*!g brilliant”! After scoring applause, laughs and rave reviews at this year’s Cannes, it is undeniable that this film has a quiet magic that creeps up on even the most unsuspecting viewer. Just like a football match it is fuelled with highs and lows. Director Ken Loach hits the back of the net with it, as he takes you on an emotional rollercoaster between the worlds of football and its northern working-class fans. Although some may not consider football to be emotional, you are shown that beneath the rowdy bravado, there is real comradery and real people simply living their lives. The game is their inspirational backdrop.

The plot (what little there is) centres around Vince (Stephen Graham, the mental skinhead from This Is England) and his best mates Neil (Danny Dyer, the East End wideboy from, well, any lads-mag-inspired British film ever made) and Mikey (BAFTA winner Noel Clarke from Kidulthood and Adulthood). Vince is depressed following his divorce, so his mates decide this is the perfect opportunity to leave their women behind and indulge in a “boys’ weekend”.

With a random sexy woman driver in-toe (clearly there to give Danny Dyer the time to shine with his brilliant crude humour), they all set off to the world’s smallest village. However, when they get there they find the whole village is overrun with psychotic, man-eating women. It turns out there is an airborne toxin that affects the womenfolk and is turning them into man-hating zombies. Their idea of a weekend full of debauchery goes down the pan when they find themselves completely cut off and fighting for their lives.
